Below are a few clarifications regarding the data in our newsletter:
All data presented is based on youth participants' responses. For adult participants' responses, see our Results section.
There is a typo in the first table: Filipino youth participants defining family as "My parents and siblings" should be 4.49%, NOT 14.49%. This has been corrected in our Results section.
Percentages are are a comparison to the total sample size. For example, we arrived at the 4.49% above by dividing the 17 Filipino youth who chose "My parents and siblings" by all the youth who participated (i.e., 379).
The concept of family boundaries is more complicated than appears in the data presented. The table suggests that family boundaries are sequentially expanded; we think first of our nuclear family, then of grandparents, then of aunts and uncles, etc. In reality, our conception of family boundaries is not sequential. We may include friends in our definition of family before we include grandparents. Because of this complication, the data does not perfectly capture how Filipinos and Koreans think differently about family boundaries.
